On May 25th, 1820 they named their new town Point Fortescue after Captain John's father-in-law Sir George Vernon (1692 – 1748). The first settler in Point Fortescue was Mr. Merrill who located a cabin on North Third Street about two miles north of where today's Main Street meets it; he built this cabin while still living at home which served as its nucleus until he moved away in 1827 when he donated land for a public square adjacent to his house that still stands today known as Merrill Square When General Knox arrived at Fortress Monroe on July 14th while leading Ulysses S Grant's army across Canada during the War of Independence Lieutenant Governor James Ketchum ordered all British subjects within range be called back throughout our Province... Accordingly orders were given for every person found within four miles or soof any fort or post not to leave without leave and security being given for their goods... At 2 Pm., Wednesday Aug 3rd,...a large force consisting chieflyof militiamen amounted unto 3000 men... They marched towards Boston keeping close together through woods & fields till they came opposite Lisbon Post road which we pass’d just before night MONDAY AUGUST 5TH... Here they halted & formed line abreast facing us viz: rear Companies left Regiment several hundred strong march’d forward 400 yards beyond lines forming 200 yards behind…the rest stopped short about 500 yds distance between them &Forming Columns returned Home Sunday Evening AUGUST 6TH having accomplished their object As soon as darkness fully intervened they resumed their march direct& continued along Lisbon Road thro’fields past Brunswick village then along Meetinghouse swampy ground thro’which I rejoin’d my regimentAbout 9 Pm Saturday Night reaching our encampment near Portsmouth early SUNDAY MORNING Sept 1st... South Portland, Maine is a town located in the town of Auburn on the southern coast of Maine. The population was 5,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bangor-Orono-Maine metropolitan area. The first European settlers in South Portland were James K. Polk and his family who arrived in 1822. They built a log cabin on what is now Main Street and named it "Kirkland." The Polk family operated a sawmill and gristmill here until 1842 when they sold their land to Colonel Gideon Welles who donated it to the town for use as a public square. In 1851, South Portland Mayor John A. Macdonald granted permission to establish an Episcopal church in South Portland by granting them land adjacent to what is now Library Square (now Park Square). cornerstone laid July 21, 1851 by Archbishop George William Smith Sr., Bishop of Worcester The first building was completed in 1854 and served as the church until 1960 when it was replaced by the current structure which was dedicated on October 1, 1960. The First Methodist Church also opened its doors in South Portland on December 3, 1865 with Reverend Julius Hirst officiating over 50 members from both denominations. Reverend Hirst had come from nearby Bangor where he had been pastor of Christ's Chapel AME Zion Church since1858 In 1932 Methodist Bishop Gwynn Waddle ordained Rev Edward John Sibley as Ministerial candidate for SouthPortland after rejecting an application from Pastor Harry Sheppard due to lack of facilities Atwood Avenue Baptist Church became overcrowded so new ground floor buildings were built across Atwood Avenue between 1949-1953 On November 20th 1959 services began at Asbury Presbyterian Church following plant closing of local paper mill On May 15th 1965 Rev Harry Sheppard assumedPastorate at Atwood Ave Baptist After 4 years serviceorship there became vacant but reestablished worship Nov 24th 1969 When PentecostalChurch opened alongside Asbury PresbyterianChurch on Market Street SE corner lot behind post office
