South Portland, Maine is a town in Penobscot County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,849 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bangor-Auburn-Farmington Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first known inhabitants of what is now South Portland were Native Americans. Portuguese traders and fishermen arrived in 1638 and started to trade with the native people. In 1768, following the Treaty of Paris after the American Revolution, Britain ceded most of present-day Maine to France as part of the Louisiana Purchase. French colonists began to arrive in increasing numbers in 1802 and 1812, making South Portland an incorporated town on January 15, 1815. During World War II, many troops from America's Pacific Theater were stationed here during World War II including many who played significant roles in victory such as General Dwight D. Eisenhower and Admiral Chester Nimitz. In 1951 SouthPortland voters passed a resolution proclaiming February 26th "National Fish Fry Day". The event has continued annually ever since with various events throughout the year that coincide with it such as street vendors selling fresh fish on Main Street during fry day and local restaurants serving up their best dishes for free while supplies last on celebrated Saturday nights around town

The town continued to grow and prosper until the 1960s, when manufacturing left South Portland behind and it has been slowly declining ever since. However, recent economic opportunities have brought new life to SouthPortland and its economy is rebounding again. The first inhabitants of what is now South Portland were fishermen who arrived in 1820 from Britain. The town was initially named "Ferryport" after its location on the Strait of Haddam near present-day Portsmouth. At first, fishing was the only occupation in which people lived in SouthPortland; however, over time other trades began to develop including printing presses and carpentry shops which helped fuel the growth of the town during its early years. In 1916, when SouthPortland residents successfully lobbied to be placed within the newly created state of Maine, they realized that their community would need more than just fishing commerce to thrive economically. They were right – within a few decades, textile mills had replaced textile factories as two of SouthPortland's primary sources of income. As these mills closed down throughout mainland America during World War II (due largely to wartime competition), so too did many jobs inSouthPortland: most notably boatbuilding which went out of business due to technological advancements developed by navy submarines at that time! However, despite this downturn – or perhaps because of it – things began slowly beginning to improve forSouth Portland circa 1990 when retail redevelopment began taking hold along Route 1A corridor between downtown/the Mall (then known as The Quarters) and Route 102A (now Knowlton Road). This corridor became one of southern Maine’s premier shopping destinations with an influx of high-end stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus while also creating new jobs in production sectors such as fabricated metalsmithing! Nowadays there are multiple restaurants throughout town offering fresh seafood items plus local malt beers available on draught at some locations! One popular restaurant chain started up here recently called “The Lobster Shack” which offers delicious lobster dishes all night long! Well worth trying out if you love seafood 🙂
