In 1978, following years of growth in international shipping traffic along the Penobscot River due to both new transportation methods and increased demand for cargo storage near Boston Harbor, South Portland became home to America's first container port when New England Container Terminal Incorporated was built nearby on Pemaquid Coveoung waterfront property adjacent to then-Maritime Bank & Trust Company building on Commercial Street.(now First National Bank) The port continued operation until 1995 when it was closed down by management due to economic problems caused by globalization and other factors. Today SouthPortland remains an important manufacturing center with many companies that produce items such as plastics and fabricated metals including aluminum sheeting and boat parts; textiles such as fiberglass insulation; furniture such as particleboard; chemicals such as propane gas tanks and paint cans; food processing including hog gestation crates for pigs

South Portland, Maine is a town located in the heart of the Gulf of Maine and straddling the border of Washington County and Penobscot County. The population was 9,611 at the 2010 census. South Portland is one of two towns in Maine that are both currently majority- white (the other being Augusta). The town was first settled by English colonists in 1624 as part of an effort to secure land from Native Americans. The town's name may be derived from King John's request for prayers to be sent to "Portland" in reference to his victory over the Indians at Battle Of Narragansett Bay on July 4th, 1626. In 1892, South Portland annexed adjoining Washington County and became one of only four towns in Maine with a full school system. During this time, business flourished thanks to its natural resources and safe streets. In 1925, after years of discussion between local officials and developers, South Portland officially became an independent city under then Mayor Alvah Cushman. This designation marked an important milestone for SouthPortland as it signaled that city government would no longer be beholden to county or state regulations regarding development or zoning laws. Throughout most of the 20th century, North End attracted more jobs thanSouth Portland due to its active manufacturing sector and large population size – until recently still true today among some businesses within North End which have migrated into Downtown South Portland instead.
