South Portland, Maine is a town in Cumberland County, Maine, United States. The population was 3,748 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bangor-South Portland-Easton, Maine Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1825 as a small settlement on the south bank of the Penobscot River by refugees from Rhode Island. In 1838 South Portland became an incorporated village and in 1865 it became a city. In 1980 South Portland abolished its city status and became a town again under the terms of an act of the legislature that year. The first permanent settler in what is now South Portland was Captains John Fenton and Nicholas Goodrich who arrived there in 1825 after fleeing from Rhode Island during the King's War (1812-14). They built their first house on what is now First Street near present day Meeting House Square. A few years later they erected a larger frame home on land that still stands today between Main and Second Streets east of downtown. In 1830 Captain John Swayze arrived with his family from Connecticut to start his own farmstead about three miles northeast of where SouthPortland stands today known as Middle Road. Soon afterwards other settlers began arriving and soon there were six separate farms scattered around what is now First Street, Third Avenue, Fourth Avenue, Fifth Avenue and Sixth Avenue north of downtown - all within walking distance of one another! By 1840 most of these farming families had also moved to their current homes along what are now Broadway and Seventh Avenues east side of town center just beyond Park Services property (now known as Providence Park). Water transportation became essential for goods moving overland through this region so early settlers built bridges over Penobscot River where it converges with Stillwater Creek southeast of town center - today known as Waterfront Drive - providing easy access to both riverine fishing opportunities for white fish enthusiasts (the sport fishery continues to be popular today) as well as harvesting local cranberry bushes which were then dried for fuel or export; also important at this time was trade with Pemaquid Bay downriver where lobsterbing had become very popular due to improved conditions following renovations on said bay's shoreline by President James Kappner less than two years earlier! Many famous individuals have been associated with SouthPortland including Drs Samuel Harned & Augustus Woodbury who ran one of Maine's only medical clinics out Of State until it closed circa 1955; singer/songwriter Ray Price who spent many summers here before he relocated to Lubbock TX; Mayor Harry Dexter White who served two terms beginning in 1969; author Ken Follett who resided here for many years prior to his death in 2006; businessman Don attic whose company manufactured mattresses adjacent to FDR Presidential Library & Museum up until its closure in 2000; poet Patti Smith whose father owned several acres adjoining her childhood home located just northwest corner Seventh Ave., near Old Orchard Rd.; composer Arvo Part’s mother lived here when he was born some sixty miles away in Helsinki Finland while she cared for him while he attended school etc etc etc... Today much like then life centered around agriculture although there continue to be some industrialization including participation by businesses such as Home Depot beginning circa 1970 when store employees installed air conditioning following concerns about high temperatures outside during summer months; manufacture/export/consumption by numerous schools located throughout central ME contingent upon need arising from weather anomalies such as extreme cold snaps or hurricanes... Today’s economy relies heavily upon tourism which supports jobs within restaurants, hotels, service providers et al......
South Portland was first settled in 1650 by Englishmen as part of the Plymouth Colony. The town was named for Sir Edward Falmouth, 1st Baronet of South Portland, who donated land to the colony. The town became a textile center after it became part of the United States in 1784. In 1825, South Portland joined Maine as a statehood state. In 1859, the town made history when it organized its own political district and adopted a new constitution. The town continued to grow and develop until 1920, when it lost its status as an incorporated municipality and merged with neighboring towns Bangor and Ayer.
