In 1892, Charles Fenton opened a small shop on Commercial Street called Fenton’s Gun Shop. This business was the first in town and it continued to be run until 1954. In 1898, Henry Hetfield opened a store on State Road 101A which is still open today as The Henry Hetfield Store. This store was the first in town and it continued to be run until 1952. In 1903, John Lewis opened his own store on Main Street which is still open today as Lewis’ Firearms Emporium. This store was the first in town and it continued to be run until 1954. In 1915, Harry Jorgensen established his own business on Meetinghouse Square called Jorgensen’s Gunsmithing & Armory. This business was the first in town and it continued to be run until 1954. On December 15, 1918, South Portland became an incorporated city with its own government after a referendum vote taken by residents of the town optioned incorporation into a new metropolitan area located east of Boston known as South Portland-Hingham-Worchester County Commuter Area (SPCCA). At this time SPCCA consisted of only South Portland with a population of 2,500 people living within its borders while all other municipalities within SPCCA were annexed into Boston at various times during their histories including 1912-1920; 1951-1954; 1959-1962; 1966-1978; 1980-1984; 1990-. On July 1st 1968SouthPortland reverted back to its prior status as an unincorporated community when SPCCA merged with neighboring towns Seward and Scarborough forming what is now Longmeadow Township within Suffolk County., however there have been periodic efforts over recent years by some residents ofSouthPortland to have their municipality absorbed back into SPCCA . In November 2002 Mayor Steve Stephens announced that he would not seek reelection after several years of disappointments with little progress being made towards rejoiningSPCCA .)

South Portland, Maine is a town located in Cumberland County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,836 at the 2010 census. It has been part of the Boston metropolitan area since 1987. On December 11th, 1820 South Portland was founded by Captain John MacArthur and his crew on the barque "Cumberland." The first settler in what is now South Portland was John White who built a cabin on the bank of the river in 1824. In 1862 Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest landed his army in Cumberland County and began raids against Union civilians and military installations. On October 16th, 1862 Forrest's cavalry unit attacked a small detachment of Union soldiers led by Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Wainwright at Bemis Heights Road and Goldfield Street near present day Main Street. Colonel Wainwright retaliated with an attack on Forrest's force that resulted in three dead and thirteen wounded. After this event South Portland became known as "The Battlefield of Battle Mountain". On December 11th, 1820 Captain John MacArthur set sail from Portsmouth for North America aboard the barque "Cumberland" with seventeen other passengers including six women and four children under five years old. The vessel reached Cape Cod on January 3rd, 1821 after a passage lasting more than two months without incident. Although they had no land to disembark on (the ships were sailing along both coasts), theseNew Englanders were optimistic about their new home because they knew that slavery would not be allowed anywhere else on American soil.-"America First!" They were wrong! A few weeks later Commodore James Cook sailed into view from Gravesend Bay looking like something out of a dream when he spotted an island off shore which turned out to be India-Island but everyone thought it was Cape Cod because there wasn't another Like it around! This excited all aboard as they knew that wherever America went she would bring back slavery! Unfortunately for them this dream home never materialized because five days later HMS Beagle arrived off Cape Cod carrying news that North America had indeed become free! Captain MacArthur quickly realized his mistake however as he could see people living freely among those who now lived under English rule-a sight he would never forget.-"Welcome Home!" Smuggling continued unabated even though slavery was abolished federally in 1865; smuggling gangs still operated out of New Bedford Harbor until1879 when Massachusetts outlawed open container drinking while also outlawing smoking inside public buildings effectiveJanuary 1st,-a significant milestone events within Boston's history... In pursuanceofthis proclamation citizens ofBostonandSouthPortland formed themselves into Committees to Suppress Smuggling [and] Black Marketeering]…The Committee met monthly at one o'clockPSTto discuss matters affecting trade between Boston & South Portland….The Committee appointed Arthur Youngs Agent for Southern Oregon [inafter becoming ArthurYoungs agent for Maine]….Despite numerous prosecutions or convictions resulting from its activities membersofthe Society continued smuggling until 1792 when government restrictions placed upon organized crime ended…..After this time black marketeers operating outside legal limits came to be known as 'privateers'.

The town initially consisted of just a few homes and was known for its mills which produced cloth, paper, and other materials for local businesses. In the early 1800s, land in the area became available for settlement and as the town grew it began to acquire more commercial properties. By 1860, South Portland had a population of over 100 people and two churches. The next decade saw much growth in South Portland as new industries emerged such as shipbuilding and printing. During World War II, South Portland played an important role in the war effort with its production of munitions and vehicles. After the war ended, many businesses closed butSouthPortland continued to grow through waves of immigrants until the early 21st century when it lost much of its manufacturing base to technological advances.
