South Portland, Maine is a town in Cumberland County, Maine, United States. The population was 9,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of thePortland–South Portland–Biddeford Micropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1810 by settlers from Maryland and Delaware who built a hamlet on the east side of the Penobscot River. A post office called South Portland was established in 1824, and remained in operation until 1855. The first settler to homestead in what is now South Portland was Levi Coffin. The town name comes from an area near where it now stands known as "Plymouth Sound." In 1839, local farmer John Fowle donated land to build a public school and store on what is now Main Street. In 1865, the first train came through town; it was operated by the Bangor & Maine Railroad Company and pulled by two horses. In 1870, when Cumberland County became part of Maine, South Portland became part of its new county seat; however, because it had no courthouse or jail (the county had only one building for court purposes), government operations continued to be conducted from Bangor until 1907 when they were transferred to South Portland proper. During World War II (1941-1945), many factories were located in and around SouthPortland including Allied Aircraft Component Co., American Shipbuilding Corporation (ASC), Bechtel Corporation (later Bechtel National Inc.), Chrysler Corporation (Chrysler Building/Beachwood Plant), Ford Motor Company's Hawthorne Assembly Plant #2(Ford-Hawthorne plant) and Union Carbide & Chemical Company's White Sands plant #1(White Sands plant). In 1957-1959, construction began on JFK Boulevard which connected downtown with UpperMain Street; this later became Main Street East which runs through most of the current core of SouthPortland while still retaining its original name since it has never been crossed over into neighboring townships or rural areas such as those around Moxon Falls or Ganges River communities such as Farmington or Auburn Hills etc.; instead much of JFK Boulevard remains within present day south-central portion of town limits while also curving towards downtown just north of Interstate 95 exit 11A/SR 1 between US 6/US 21 exit 10A/SR 3E and SR 16A/SR 1S After years of planning and engineering work by then Mayor Don Trimble – during his final term in office – JFK Boulevard finally opened to traffic on October 20th 2009 - becoming one full block wide streetscape extending from LowerMain Street all the way up to I-95 Exit 11A/SR 1 between US 6/+US 21 exits 10A+SR 3E
