South Portland’s economy was based on fish farming, boatbuilding, and milling until the late 1800s when it began to decline due to factors such as overpopulation and economic depression. However, there are still a number of remaining businesses in the town which contribute to its unique character. The first settlement in what is now South Portland was established in 1636 by Pilgrims who were seeking refuge from religious persecution in England. The population of South Portland increased rapidly after they moved here, reaching 479 by 1775. During the 18th century, local fishermen became dominant in the fishery due to their experience and knowledge of the area’s resources. Boatbuilding also became an important industry in this period; boats used for shipping goods upriver were built here. The town grew rapidly during this time with more than 1,000 people living here by 1810. However, at some point around 1830-1835, economic conditions within SouthPortland deteriorated severely due to overpopulation and lack of available land for development. This led to a series of riots which occurred throughout 1836-1838; these riots were responsible forthe substantial loss of life that occurred in SouthPortland.* Many residents left SouthPortland during these years due to fear for their safety* *As a result of these events*, most of SouthPortland’s commercialDistrict remained abandoned until digital age made it possible for entrepreneurs like Dennis Connell (founder of Connelly’s Furniture)to revive District commerce* In 1854-1855*, whenDEMAND FOR LOCAL STUFF WENT UPRIVER AFTER A VINTAGE BUSINESS WAS REPLACED BY A NEW BUSINESS IN THE DISTrict- DEMAND FOR LATER TIMES TO RETURN TO PREVIOUS CONDITIONS CAUSING THE closure OF MANY OF SOUTHPORTLIVES* As recently as 1915*, only 2%of property values had been regained since 1840*. For much of its history, Northport tended to overshadow South Portland as both towns functioned independently†† *. However, beginning around World War II*, Northport began becoming increasingly reliant onSouthPortland because its docks were located there‡§ *. After the war ended*, Northport lost much importancerelativetothetown; however** *Many former residents have returnedtoSouthPortland through various means*** *Although most businesses have closed down or been turned into apartments over the past few decades***** *Most notable exception is Jens Jensen & Sons Fish Market which remains open today

In 1786, the Treaty of Paris ended the American Revolutionary War and granted British Columbia to Canada. This left South Portland as the only U.S. state without a French language border. The town's growth slowed during the 19th century because of lack of population and infrastructure, but resumed in the 20th century with an influx of immigrants from Asia and Europe. By 1970, South Portland had reached its current size and shape.
