South Portland, Maine is a town in Hancock County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. The name of the town is derived from its location on the south side of the river Penobscot. By 1840, Bank Harbor had become a major commercial center with ships departing for American markets daily carrying goods such as lumber and flour to local farmers and merchants. In 1847–48, Congress passed legislation authorizing construction of a railroad through Hancock County and SouthPortland became one of those towns along with Bangor and Auburn (then part of Falmouth) authorized to receive passengers and freight on that rail line. This railroad helped stimulate economic growth throughout southeastern Maine during the late 19th century as more people moved into this isolated rural area to seek opportunity and development opportunities. During World War II, many men from South Portland enlisted in military service or worked on war production plants within southeast Maine although most residents remained engaged in farming until after Pearl Harbor when hostilities began empirically affecting southern Maine communities including SouthPortland which saw significant loss due to aerial bombing raids denounced by both President Franklin D Roosevelt as “a barbarity worse than anything we have ever seen” . Aftermath of World War II brought increased economic development opportunities following passage of federal highway funds intended for primary roadside improvement projects across northeastern Maine which led to heavy traffic congestion along routes now known as Interstate 95 corridorb while also increasing demand for housing developments located close by like North End Mills mall which offers convenient access to I-95 exit 8A providing easy access into downtown Boston

The town developed a strong economy based on fishing, lumbering and shipbuilding. The first post office was established in 1812 and the first school was built in 1825. In 1862, the town became part of Massachusetts and quickly lost its importance. However, it remained an important community until the early 1990s when its population decreased to around 1,000 people.
