Saco, Maine is a small town in the United States located on the Penobscot River. The population was 7,662 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bangor- Saco, Maine Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Saco was John Stevens in 1604. He named it "Saco" after his ship, the Dolphin, which he rented from saccharine traders in England. In 1794, Colonel Christopher Heath built a sawmill and gristmill here and began producing lumber for Portland's new millrace bridge project. When this proved too costly to maintain and operate, Heath sold his mills to businessman James Grafton in 1827. Grafton renamed them the Grafton Manufacturing Company and began making farm implements, flourishes such as urns and chisels and other products for local markets. By 1830, the company had produced over two thousand items including bicycles and cannons for General James Iredell's American Revolution army! During World War II (1940-1945), Saco was home to one of eight divisions of the United States Army Corps of Engineers working on inland waterways throughout New England. Many residents were drafted into military service during that time; many others helped build or maintain infrastructure such as dams and bridges across streams and rivers essential for war purposes. The town experienced great prosperity during postwar years as factories production increased; however, economic decline hit Saco hard after 1975 when federal funding dried up following President Ford's famous budget cuts called "the Quiet Revolution". In recent years there has been renewed interest in downtown Saco as an artsy center with several small businesses opening up around it since 2008; however much progress has still been made without state support which could help bring about larger projects like a grocery store or renovated Amtrak station – both would improve quality of life for all citizens long term!

One theory suggests that the name may have been inspired by a Native American word meaning "place where game is killed." In 1878, Saco became one of six towns to join together to form the new Portland metropolitan area. As part of this merger, Saco became its own municipality with full power to levy taxes and make decisions within its limits. Today's economy revolves around tourism (particularly waterfalls), manufacturing (especially farm machinery), health care services, and government services such as law enforcement and firefighting.. Saco was the first town in Maine to be chartered as a town. The town was laid out by Captain John Alden in 1785. Saco had a population of about fifty people when it was chartered, and it grew slowly until 1802, when it had a population of two hundred people. In that year, Saco became the capital of Maine.
