During the American Civil War, Saco sided with the Union side and residents were able to keep their homes and businesses unaffected. After the war ended, Saco began to decline and its population fell to 1,412 in 1870. However, it regained some of its former prosperity thanks to an influx of Scandinavian immigrants who founded several businesses in Saco during this time. In 1990, Saco became one of thirty-six towns statewide that joined the New England city community experiment.
