Saco is a town in Penobscot County, Maine, United States. The population was 778 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bangor–Auburn, Maine Metropolitan Statistical Area. Saco is known for its Saco Cheese factory and its annual milk festival which includes races and walks around downtown. The earliest European settlers in what is now Saco were people from Holland who came to this area in 1638 as part of the Mayflower Compact. The first permanent settler was Nicholas Ayer, who arrived in 1647 with his family. In 1836, John Stevens founded the town of Auburn on land that he donated to the community. Saco was incorporated as a town on July 1, 1854. In 1865, Saco passed an ordinance providing for female suffrage and became one of the first towns in New England to do so. In 1898, after years of debate over whether or not to annex Forestville into Saco (the village had a population of 514), voters chose to annex it instead and renamed it after their founder John Stevens. In 1916, construction began on what would become the city's first municipal building - a two-story Romanesque Revival style structure built by local builder George Fenton Hewitt at a cost of $7000 (). The building housed the Town Board until 1978 when it moved into present day City Hall Annexe within City Hall itself. On January 4th 2009 incumbent Mayor Darrell Ducharme announced that he would run for reelection against challenger Danica Siegel with 70% support from residents according to unofficial results. Ultimately however Ducharme won reelection unopposed with 71% of votes tallied. The city has seen several expansions since then including new parks and recreation areas such as Olympic Park which opened in 2013; new high school buildings which opened in fall 2014 followed by renovations & additions such as: echo Arena which opened Fall 2015 & contains state-of-the-art basketball courts & locker rooms;[5] Anheuser Busch Stadium which hosted both college football games between Maine State University & #8 Yale University before being sold off& renovated into luxury seating for events starting late summer 2016 onward& finally[6] Oneonta High School which reopened Fall 2016 after years closed due to budget cuts.The town of Saco was founded in 1795 by John Chandler. The town grew rapidly due to the expansive logging and agriculture industries, and soon became a major center for industry and commerce. In 1871, the city of Saco was incorporated, and the population growth continued until the early 1920s when a series of devastating fires destroyed much of downtown. Afterward, Saco relied heavily on volunteer fire departments to provide emergency services. By the late 20th century, however, Saco had begun to emerge as an independent community with its own unique culture and history. Today, the town is home to a variety of businesses and cultural attractions, including a library and museum, as well as several parks that offer year-round recreation opportunities.
