Saco, Maine is a town located in Penobscot County, Maine. The population was 1,569 at the 2000 census. Saco is the most populous town in Penobscot County and the second-most populous town in the state of Maine. It is also one of two towns in Maine with a population over 1,000. The first people to settle what is now Saco were Native Americans who called it "Washakatake". The first white person to live in what is now Saco was John Stevens who came to this area from Boston in 1799. In 1827, Nathaniel Hawthorne bought land here and began developing his Hawthorne Farm estate which included part of today's downtown. In 1835, he donated the land for use as a public square which became known as "Hawthorne Square". In 1906, Congress passed an act designating Saco as a national center for textile production because of its importance in this industry during that time. This designation helped Putnam Mills become one of America's leading textile companies. The mill closed down in 2002 but has been preserved as part of the Putnam Mills State Historic Site since 1980. Today, Saco continues to be an important community with its many businesses and institutions such as Sacred Heart University (a Catholic university) and local hospitals such as Saint Francis Hospital and Eastern Maine Health Care System (EMHCS). It also has several annual events including festivals for arts and crafts, car shows, rodeos and agriculture fairs

The town of Saco was founded in 1824 by General John Butler, who named it for his birthplace, Saco, Maine. The town grew rapidly and by 1830 had a population of over 100 people. It became a port on the Penobscot River and prospered as a commercial center. In 1847, the town's first school was built and in 1849 it had its first post office. By 1860, the population had reached 350 people and the town began to develop into an agricultural center with several large cotton plantations. The towns growth stopped in the early 1870s when heavy rains caused extensive flooding which destroyed many homes and businesses. In 1875, Saco lost its status as a commercial center when it merged with nearby Auburn to form the new city of Auburn.
