In 1621, the English explorer John Smith visited Fort de la Rivière and named it after his patron saint, Saint George. By 1624, the English had abandoned their settlements in Labrador for what is now Quebec City, Canada. However, some of these early British colonists maintained relations with their Newfoundland counterparts until 1783 when British forces invaded Nova Scotia and captured Cartier's colony in what is now Acadia Parish. Aftermath of this battle led to France ceding much land along both sides of the Atlantic Oceanto Britain as part of King George III's Treaty of Utrecht. In 1793-94, an act by royal decree settled all claims between Great Britain and North America by giving Britishers exclusive rights to trade with all Native American nations east of Mexico City without any compensation to Canada or Indian tribes living west of that line. This event also helped spur development within present-day Saco County because most new land sales took place here during this time period. Loyalist refugees from Ireland who had fled before Confederation fleeing across Lake Champlain arrived in large numbers beginning in 1810 and soon formed a community known as "The Irishmen" around nearby Enterprise rivermouth which became known as "Dundalk." In early 2020s there were plans to build a new municipal building which would have increased capacity for government services including social services that were struggling to keep up with changes in population density within Hancock County due to suburban growth throughout central Maine
The town of Saco, Maine was founded in 1795 by Loyalists who had fled the British during the American Revolution. The town was named for Captain John Saco, a member of the militia that fought against the British. The first settler in Saco was Samuel Chase. In 1801, the town had a population of just 10 people and was located on the eastern border of present-day Saco Township. By 1810,Saco had a population of 100 people and it grew rapidly in following years. In 1825, the town had a population of 500 people and by 1830 it had reached 1,000 people. By 1840, Saco had 2,000 citizens and by 1850 it had 4,000 residents. In 1865, Saco became an incorporated village with a population of 575 people. The growth ofSacomerville led to increased demand for land withinthetown limits and in 1892-1893 two lots were sold for $2 per acre to create what is now known as downtownSacotown. In 1902-1903, construction began on what is now known as Market Square which served as the original business district within sacotown. The square would later be renamed Main Street after Mayor William Main whose estate provided funds for its development. In 1908-1909 construction began on Castle Hill which housed the first post office in sacotown and remains one ofsacodowntown's most popular tourist attractions today. In 1915- 1916 construction began on Dexter Avenue which became oneofsacodowntown's longest streets and still serves as its primary commercial artery today During World War II (1939-1945), Sacojunctionwasxeriouslocallocationfor resources due to its strategic location atthe junctionof several major highways including I-95and US 101 Today,thetowns statusasaplaceofcommerceand culture continues to be highly respected with multiple restaurants and businesses existing throughout downtownSacoTownship .
