Saco was founded on December 10, 1802 by English settler John Fowle as an outpost on Fort Kent's (now Saco) peninsula. As a frontier town, Saco prospered due to its natural resources and its location on the border of two Canadan provinces: Quebec and New Brunswick. The Town Council was first convened on December 10th 1802 when John Fowle set up his post here with twelve men to manage things while he explored the area for potential new settlements. The first store opened in 1803 and soon after other businesses followed including a tailor shop, blacksmith shop and hotel that still stands today. In 1861 Saco had 9 stores and 38 residents when it burned down during a firefight between British troops and American settlers in what is now called "the Battle of Noonday" In 1865 Saco became one of the towns within the newly formed Portland–Vancouver-Hilton metropolitan statistical area which ballooned in size after Canada joined forces with America in World War II to defeat Nazi Germany.
