The first permanent European settlement in what is now Saco was made by Captain John Smith and his men on December 5, 1609 when they landed on the east coast of Canada and explored the area for trade. On July 12, 1610, General Augustine Miles sent a group of English settlers to explore and survey the area around present-day Saco after hearing about a rich mineral deposit in that vicinity. In 1614 two more groups of Englishmen arrived at Saco and began exploring this new land for mineral resources including lead and silver mines which would later become important to the town's economy. By 1793 over 100 families lived in saco including many Loyalists who evacuation from America during the American Revolution led to its fall into disrepair as most of their homes were destroyed or burned during that time period along with much other property within the town boundaries which also had been looted by British forces prior to their departure from America. Most notably during World War II large scale manufacturing took place at nearby Bangor Shipbuilding Company located downtown where local residents helped build military hardware such as tanks and artillery pieces used throughout Europe during World War II while also losing their homes as collateral damage as war production exploded throughout central Maine creating numerous ghost towns scattered throughout rural areas across New England following conflict that left millions jobless or underemployed.
