When Saco, Maine was founded in 1837, it was the most northerly town in New England. The town's location and history made it a natural spot for optical businesses. By 1860, there were five business places in Saco, including one that specialized in making glass lenses and other optical products. In 1865, local businessman James Prentice opened the first post office in Saco and began to sell items such as books, hats and other clothing from his store. This started the tradition of independent bookstores being present in Saco until the early 1970s when they all merged into one large company. One of the most important events at this time happened when John Logie Baird developed an experimental Television system using a camera attached to a revolving screen which he called "The Baird System". This event led to Saco becoming home to America's first television station- WSB-TV- which began broadcasting on October 15th 1920 from what is now Main Street. At this time, television had not become prevalent yet throughout much of North America so many people did not have access to it. However, with WSB-TV's broadcasts coming through saco's windows every day during those years (and still does today), people across the entire town became familiar with its signal. Due to its proximity to Boston where much manufacturing took place at that time, many businesses located nearby such as J & L Publishers Ltd., Belcher Furniture Inc., Great Northern Glass Company and others got their start thanks to Saco residents who would bring their goods over on Saturday nights for sale within blocks of our downtown intersection! Of course along with these businesses came many social activities like dances or potlucks which continue right up until this very day! In fact if you go back around today and take a stroll down Main Street between State and Church Streets you'll see numerous restaurants that used to occupy space once occupied by stores like J & L Publishers Ltd., Great Northern Glass Company or Belcher Furniture Inc.- all doing well because of how easy it is for people todayto get involved in local commerce! It really shows how adaptive nature can be when faced with new opportunities! In recent years there has been some effort put forth by several organizations within the community - most notably The Business Improvement District (BID) - towards preservingSacomagansett Bayou Valley cultural assets including but not limited to; restoring/preserving historic buildings; developmentally enhancing/enhancing parkland; creating walking trails; hosting arts/festivals; AND more! All without sacrificing economic vitality or impact on quality of life for locals or visitors alike...It truly is amazing what we can achieve when we come together as one community!
