Saco is a town in Hancock County, Maine, United States. The population was 5,771 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland-SouthPortland-EAST Portland Metropolitan Statistical Area. Saco was founded in 1820 and incorporated as a town in 1835. The current community began to form around 1875 when two brothers built a small log cabin on the site of present-day Saco Elementary School. Saco's first store opened in 1878 and its first post office in 1895. In 1909, the town voted to become an unincorporated community and it remains that way today. The Town of Saco celebrated its 350th anniversary in 2012. The celebration included an event honoring local residents who have made an impact on the town over time including Captain John Ayer, Daniel Webster president during the Gilded Age; Dr. Horace Mann; Mrs. Julius Rosenwald; Senator George Norris; Mayor James Purdy; and many more Saco has seen some significant changes over its history including annexations by other towns as well as natural disasters such as Hurricane Agnes which destroyed much of downtown during 1971 and also resulted in damage to several businesses which remain standing today including Fenton’s General Store which still stands as one of Saco’s most iconic buildings A variety of cultural events are held throughout the year both inside and outside of Saco’s boundaries including classical music concerts from Maine State University (MSU) located adjacent to town center while also hosting various arts & crafts shows throughout June/July each year Saco is home to three churches with services conducted every day inside or outside Holy Trinity Episcopal Church either side of Main Street
