The town of Saco, Maine was founded on December 24, 1795 by Captain John Gorham and his men from the USS Constitution. The town became a commercial center for the surrounding rural areas and its economy changed dramatically after the Revolutionary War. The first store in Saco was built on Washington Street in 1798. In 1827, the United States Congress passed an act that established two federal districts in Maine: one in the central part of the state, and another around what is now Saco. The new district included parts of what is now Saco County. In 1868, a group of developers led by J.H. Hickey bought land near downtown Saco and began to build a large city called Hickeyville. They realized that they could not build enough housing to accommodate everyone who wanted to live there, so they decided to move some of their residents out into the countryside so that they could continue farming there. And so it slowly started becoming a small town again – with people living close to each other but still using their own homes and miles away from any commercial or cultural centers. Today, Saco is home to about 25% of all Congregationalists living in New England; it has also become an important center for cranberry production (the largest producer in New England) and agricultural research at nearby Brown University.
Saco is a town in Penobscot County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,715 at the 2010 census. Saco is the county seat. It is part of the Bangor–Biddeford, Maine Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that would become Saco was first settled by fishermen and their families in 1825 as part of what is now Penobscot County. The first post office in Saco was established in 1830. By 1836, the community had a store, schoolhouse and two churches. In 1849, Saco incorporated as a town under the name "Beacon" because it was then known as Beech Island Township. The Townshend family started farming land around 1870 and built their first house on Main Street in 1874. They became major landowners through their ownership of several farms and mills along the river valley between Holyoke and Bangor. The Townshends were active supporters of local politics and served on numerous boards and committees throughout their lifetime including serving as mayor from 1936 to 1938 and 1940 to 1944; member of the Penobscot Valley Water Authority Board from 1938 to 1945; treasurer for Penobscot Valley School District No 2 from 1945 to 1951; president of Bangor-Biddeford Chamber of Commerce from 1951 to 1957; chairman of Central Maine Regional Planning Commission from 1957 to 1965; director for planning services withrespect to education for all school districts within central Maine from 1965 until his retirement in 1991 In 1957, after years of work by residents son-in-law Bob Newell (1905-1996) who headed up many civic programs such as creating a park system that includes Saco's Main Street Historic District), Mayor John Ferraro designated Saco's Main Street Historic District which included six contributing buildings dating back to 1795 including one home whose builder may be unidentified but likely Samuel Morse arrived here circa 1800). The district also includes two other buildings that are significant: One housed an early version of sacodownloaders – loading machines used during World War II – which were operated outfitted with belt conveyors before they were replaced by powerful diesel engines sometime after 1958 while another building (now known as Old Second Baptist Church) dates back to 1840 when it served as a meeting place for Congregationalists living near Bangor before moving here permanently about 1850’ There have been various attempts over time by citizens or city officials at restoring some or all aspects or this district but without success so far making it an official designation/protected property/historic landmark status

Saco is a town in Maine, United States. The population was 997 at the 2010 census. Saco is part of the Portland-Vancouver-Newport, ME Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first settled in 1799 by Englishmen and their families who had been driven out of what is now Québec by the French during the Seven Years' War. In 1802, Saco's first store opened and became one of the most successful in Maine. A millinery shop followed in 1810 and soon there were several stores, two churches (one Episcopal, one Methodist), a post office, a schoolhouse (1812), and a stagecoach stop on Route 11. By 1830, Saco had 1 blacksmith, 4 farmers, 5 sawmills/ditchers/blacksmiths/packers/cordwainers (all other businesses closed about that time), 2 barbershops (both converted to hotels around 1850)), 3 grocery stores (two built before 1840), 6 hotel rooms and 10 apartments. In 1860 census there were 27 residents; by 1920 it had grown to over 100 with 14 businesses including 7 grocery stores plus 8 hotels). In 1899 Saco's first municipally organizedumber agency was established which lasted until 1907 when it merged with regional government services forming the present day city government In 1912 Saco lost its market for recreational goods so an amusement park () was built nearby on land donated by businessman George Dennison which operated until 1957 when it was replaced by an open air museum (). Pope Francis visited Saco in 2016 and pronounced it "the largest municipality in his visit to America".
Saco, Maine was the first town in New England to be chartered as an official town. The town was founded on the Saco River in 1784 by a group of settlers from Portsmouth, NH. The name of the town may be derived from sacum, meaning "salt."
