The Saco area is home to several notable businesses and organizations including: Bangor-Gimnasia-Vermont Regional High School (formerly Bangor East Middle School), Pennington Savings Bank, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Saco State University, and Southeastern Railroad Museum.

By 1922, Saco had more than 10 miles of road surface covered with paving stones that made it one of America's " busiest" towns at that time. Saco experienced significant growth during World War II due to its position as a majorportation center for Canada because Portland did not have enough facilities to accommodate all the troops coming through during that time period. During Fitzgerald's tenure as governor there were continual efforts made by local officials to improve transportation within their jurisdiction while also increasing spending on infrastructure projects statewide including both rural roads and interconnected bridges which would become increasingly important over time Following Governor King's appointment as head developer for Maine’s construction committee in 1961 things changed dramatically with respect to transportation priorities within their state although some elements remain largely unchanged today such as funding for transportation infrastructure projects throughout Maine rather then just specific areas or counties Maine has seen continued economic growth since then with contributions from numerous industries such as forestry & fishing along with suburban sprawl beginningtoformoutsideareasynsidewestmaineandnorthcentralmaineoverlappingwithalargeresidential areacalled"TheHub",acrossfrom sacodowntownonto hills near Waterville beach which continues today despite recent challenges brought about by coastal erosion

In 1852, Saco became the capital of Maine when it was moved from Bangor toSaco. The city hosted many important events during its early years including the state's first regular election in 1853, and the opening of the Penobscot Railroad in 1858. Saco experienced a period of growth and prosperity during the late nineteenth century as a result of its role as an important transportation hub and its access to resources like lumber and seafood. However, economic conditions began to decline during World War I and World War II. After 1945 Saco slowly lost its status as a major center of commerce until it regained some popularity following housing developments that were started in the late 1990s.
