Saco, Maine is a small town located in Saco County, Maine. The population was 594 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland-South Portland-Biddeford, ME Metropolitan Statistical Area. The history of Saco goes back to 1820 when the town was founded by settlers from Worcester, Massachusetts. The first store in Saco was built on Main Street and operated by two men – John Hickey and Samuel Morse. By 1830, there were four stores in Saco with a population of 350 people. In 1835, the first school in Saco opened and served grades one through eight. In 1846, the first post office in Saco was established and operated for six years until it was discontinued due to lack of business. In 1870, the railroad arrived in Saco and began freight service from Bangor to Portland. This led to an increase in business for the merchants around town as well as more people moving into the town during this time period. Business grew so much that by 1880 there were twelve stores operating with a population of 2,500 people. During World War I (1914-18), many residents took up arms against Germany and aided Allied Forces throughout Europe. As a result of their actions, many civilians were killed or injured which had a significant impact on local businesses and citizens alike during that time period. After war ended, most citizens decided to stay put and rebuild their lives after some difficult times; however, some did migrate away from Saco over time because of opportunity or choice instead of staying put due to fear or inconvenience caused by those who sided with Germany during the war time frame (Foley & Greenough 9). Sacomans have been greatly impacted by both good times as well as bad times throughout their community’s history; however no individual has come along and completely reversed all negative trends like what has occurred recently with regards toterrorism/immigration (Foley & Greenough 10). For example since 2000 when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans after making landfall on August 29th - many businesses have closed up shop due to high costs associated with rebuilding such as materials not being available locally (Foley 11). Furthermore another example would be during Derby week which is celebrated every year within downtown Sacomansburg where nearly every store closes down including several popular tourist spots because very little money can be earnedduring that week other than buy items at “barn sales” which are usually held at various locations throughout downtown (Lopez 12). It should also be noted that while some individuals may try hard attimesto promotethesuchnegative trends withinsacomandenjoyeddoingsoduringthepastdecades(Foley&Greenough10),manyotherswithinthecommunitystilltryhardtooppositterrorism/immigration whenever possible despite havinglittletoNoreturnsontheirefforts(Lopez12).
Saco was a small town in Maine until 1886 when it became the site of the first commercial railroad in the United States. The Saco and Portland Railroad was built from 1887-1892, and 14 miles of track were laid within saco limits.
