The first European to set eyes on what is now Saco Bay was Captain John Smith on his voyage from England in 1609. He named it "Saco" after the Spanish word for "salt." In 1814, the United States built Fort George for Commodore John D. Stockton during the Mexican–American War as part of the U.S.–Mexico border defense system. It served as a military post until 1840 when it was abandoned and its land taken over by the government for agricultural purposes. In 1869, Saco became an incorporated village under state law No. 6082 (). On May 25th 1912 a fire destroyed most of downtown Saco which left many buildings vacant and without power or heat for months while reconstruction took place. A major renovation project began in 1968 with plans to make downtown into an Arts and Cultural Center with new facilities including a movie theater and open-air amphitheater that seated up to 10,000 peoplecapacity; however this never happened because of budgetary problems caused by changes in state government since then; these included budget cuts to public education throughout Maine due to sequestration of federal funds; furthermore there were also problems with traffic congestion around downtown which led to increased parking demand inside city limits despite promises made by Mayor Lois Viegler not to do so; finally due to all these issues efforts were made within city limits (mainly along Main Street) to re-open some key businesses/facilities such as banks/stores etc.; however this never happened because again budget constraints have been another cause of mainstreet gridlock Nowadays much of what once occupied downtown has been replaced or renovated elsewhere such as apartments (many run by nonprofits), bars and restaurants clustered near Interstate 95 where Amtrak Station is located outside town (the community's only commercial center), kayaking/canoeing opportunities off State Road 128 (@ Bangor gofundme page) within easy reach as well as plenty of outdoor activities available year round if weather permitting
