However, these positive trends were eventually reversed during the mid-20th century when economic recession hit and crime rates increased. This led to a decrease in population and significant declines in both business activity and total income through the 2000s until they reached their current levels.
Saco, Maine (population: 23,000) is a town located in Cumberland County, Maine. It was first settled by the Mennonites in 1827 and has since been home to a variety of religious denominations. The Saco School District serves the town and its residents. The Saco area was originally part of the Penobscot Indian Nation. In 1797, the United States acquired it from the Penobscots as part of the Treaty of Paris after the War for Independence. The Americans built a military fortification here in 1799 and named it Fort George after British general George Washington. The fort served as a garrison until 1800 when it was surrendered to France and abandoned. In 1827, John Ransom started building a log cabin on what is now Main Street in Saco while he was working for his brother-in-law Eli Whitney Jr.. By 1830, he had built two more homes and laid out a small town around them with renamed streets such as Cedar Street (later renamed State Street), Powell Street (later renamedUniversity Avenue), Main Street (later renamed Freedom Avenue), and Hancock Road (later renamed State Road). Whitney sold most of his land to settlers in 1835 but retained some for himself including what is now sacowalking paths between his homes on Hancock Road and Cedar Street. The first school in Saco opened in 1837 with ten students attending grades one through twelve. In 1840, an addition were added to grade thirteen which increased enrollment to twenty-one students per grade; this also made Saco one of only two towns in Maine to have four high schools at that time. In 1861, Saco became chartered as an incorporated city with Aldermen Isaac Asimov, Charles Walser, John Hickey, Moses Stiles serving as mayor and City Clerk Silas Morse acting as recorder/mayor pro tempore; this gave city government many features not found elsewhere at that time such as organized police force or street cleaning service like those provided today by town governments across America。 A new courthouse wasbuilt on High Court Square opposite First Baptist Church which replaced an earlier structure destroyed during Hurricane Agnes that year.; this courthouse still stands today surrounded by several businesses including KFC fast food restaurant who relocated from downtown due to damage caused by Hurricane Agnes . Over $100 million worth of renovations were carried out between 1978-1981 making it one of the most updated courthouses in New England .
