It was here that Samuel Morse first developed his telegraph system between Boston and Montreal using an old Nabisco chocolate factory water tower as an transmitting station

Saco, Maine is a town in Hancock County, Maine, United States. The population was 993 at the 2010 census. Saco is located on the Saco River and was founded in 1821 by John Means and his wife Mary . It became part of the United States in 1898. The first settler in what is now Saco was John Means, who arrived from England in 1821. He built a house on the river's bank and named it "Moses". means "place of" or "settlement." In 1824, Means married Deborah Purdy, who also came from England. They soon had five children: Sarah (1825-1911), Leah (1827-1896), Nicholas (1829-1892), Harriett (May 4, 1830-October 15, 1897) and John Jr. (January 12th 1830 - September 16th 1902). In 1828, Means' brother Nicholas moved to Saco from Boston with his family and opened a small store called New Albion Store. In 1840, he married Martha Coffin but they only had one child: Nancy Ann (November 5th 1840 - December 20th 1928). Two years later he married Johanna Sears but they only had one child: Harry Sears (December 3rd 1842 - March 7th 1922). In 1849/50 means bought some land downriver from where he now stands for $600 which he used to build a gristmill downstream on the river known as Smith's Millrace opposite modern day Perkins Road. This mill continued to be run until 1907 when it was destroyed by fire according to local history books In addition to these early settlers there were many others through out the 1800s that made their homes here including General Joseph Warren's troops during the American Revolution as well as many other families that removed here over time such as Captain David Sibley who operated an ferry across the river between this area and North Bridgeport (). Aftermath of war saw large influx of refugees fleeing religious chaos taking over Europe so much so that by 1850 there were more people living east of saco than west of it making it difficult for farmers to thrive especially after war ended There was also waves of immigrants arriving in search of better opportunities during this time such as Germans (), Irish (), Italians (), Greeks () and others coming primarily for economic opportunities not political reasons However despite all these challenges farming did continue although often at a lower level due to lack thereof capital or outside assistance
Saco was first settled in 1768 by English colonists. The town was named for Captain John Saco, who led a group of settlers from Portsmouth, NH to land near the mouth of the Saco River. Captain Saco and his men were able to find a site that would be perfect for their new settlement and they started construction on their log cabin in 1768. The first school in Saco was built in 1774. In 1825, Saco became part of the United States and it changed its name to Maine. In 1830, the town voted to become a city and it retains that name today.
