According to the United States Census Bureau, saco has a total area of , all land. As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 7,527 people residing in the town: 3% were non-Hispanic White; 98% were Black or African American; 0% Native American; and 1% other race (including 2%.

In 1812, the town's first courthouse was built and in 1834, a school opened in the town. In 1848, the first store in Saco opened and in 1865, a post office was established. In 1908, Saco became a city and in 1916, it had its first fire department. In 1922-1924, the Saco Pier project was conducted to improve maritime transportation through Saco Harbour. The project resulted in the construction of two piers that now serve as landmarks within Saco Harbour.
