Saco, Maine is an unincorporated community located in Penobscot County, Maine, United States. It lies along the Penobscot River east of Bangor and west of Machias. In 1845 a group of Englishmen under Captain John Rolfe came through what is now Saco on their way to prospect for oil near present-day Cumberland Junction. After landing they built a small cabin and began trading with the natives. In 1861 Saco became part of Caribou County when it was created from parts of Penobscot and Oxford counties. It remained an unincorporated community until 1947 when it became part of the newly created town of Bangor
