Saco, Maine is a town in Hancock County, Maine, United States. The population was 557 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland-New England metropolitan area. The town was first settled by English colonists in 1795. The name may come from Saco Bay, which is located east of the town on the Penobscot River. In 1847, Saco became a county seat and retains that role to this day. Saco was an early center for industry and commerce in Hancock County; its mills produced flour, cottonseed oil and shoe leather until World War II when they turned to munitions production. Many of the original structures still stand in Saco: George Washington Elementary School (1872), First National Bank (1892), Masonic Lodge No. 2 (1902), and Union Pacific Railroad Station (1912). Today Saco's economy revolves around its small community services; it has a library, post office and police department as well as several small businesses including a gas station and convenience store. There are also several residences scattered around the village core where people keep their homes during winter months or when they have out-of-town guests over for dinner or overnight stays.

Saco, Maine is a town located inMaritimes County, Maine. The population was 2,191 at the 2010 census. Saco is one of two towns inMaritimes County that are not part of the Bangor metropolitan area. The other town is Caribou. The first permanent Europeans to set foot in what is now Saco were French traders and missionaries who arrived in 1611. In 1682, Benedict Arnold led an attack on Fort William Henry and successfully drove the British out of the region. The Battle of Bunker Hill also occurred here when Continental forces fought a pitched battle against British troops entrenched along the modern-day street known as Monument Street. It was during this skirmish that General John Burgoyne decided to retreat from Boston instead of siege their capital which would have resulted in death for many men and women involved including Arnold himself. In 1767, Samuel Seward purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) of land northeast of Saco from Isaac Brock for £1,000 sterling ($10,000). He named it Seward Heights after his friend and neighbor Samuel Seward II who had helped finance his campaigns against Great Britain during the American Revolution.
