Saco, Maine is a town in Penobscot County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bangor-Orono metropolitan area. Saco is one of the oldest towns in New England and was founded in 1629 by English colonists as Saint John's Parish. The town had its first school in 1836 and first library in 1876. Saco residents are known for their seafood restaurant, lobster store and saco pie recipe. Saco started as a small fishing village on the banks of the Penobscot River on what is now Main Street. In 1629, English colonists arrived in what is now Saco and established Saint John's Parish as an Anglican mission station there. By 1795, when it became a borough within Penobscot County, Saco had a courthouse and two churches - one with a log bell that rang for court sessions until 1876, when electricity became available to improve services; and another with Gothic Revival elements built between 1830 and 1840 by contractor Nathaniel Lyon who also designed the brick parishioners' home on Depot Street (now Park Avenue). In 1837–38 construction began on what would become Saco's first schoolhouse - an adobe building on present-day Meeting House Road - followed by additions until 1860 when the current three-story wood frame structure replaced an earlier wooden building dating back to 1792 which served as county jail from 1796 to 1800 In 1862–63 construction began on what would become Sacoo's first library which opened its doors September 20th 1863 In 1896 voters approved spending $2 million dollars to construct newlargely replacement parts of downtown which included: four blocks north of Meeting House Road between First Street and Second Street; east side of First Street between Third Street and Fourth Streets; south side of First Street between FourthStreetand Fifth Streets; west side of First street between SixthStreetand Seventh Streets At this point only two buildings remained standing – church #1 then used as storage for several years before being razed to make way for newparish hall/office complex – but all other structures were replaced including many windows glassed over or painted black during this time period associated with conservationism during a time when few towns adopted such measures . After extensive renovation beginningin 1951 adding features such as air conditioning (1958), electrician(1962), boiler room addition (1963) prior to becoming municipality status following merger with neighboring Orona . Todaysacopoe still has original pre-renovation features making it one of mostauthentic small towns remaining in New England
