Saco is a town in Hancock County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1842 by Captain Israel Saco and his family. The Sacos were among the first permanent settlers in what is now Hancock County. The Saco post office has been in operation since 1846. A canal was built throughsaco to bring water from the Penobscot River to their farmsteads and later to Portland, Maine. The town had its first store on Main Street in 1853 and its first school in 1870. In 1865, Saco became part of the newly formed city of Bangor and lost its status as a village until it regained it with annexation of neighboring townships in 1902. In 1916, Saco became home to the world's first tractor factory when General Motors Corporation bought an existing agricultural equipment dealership and began producing tractors there. Thisactory continued production until 1978 when it was closed due to low demand for tractors after World War II ended. Today only a few remnants of this former factory remain: one building remains dedicated to GM research while another housing some of the machinery used during production; both buildings are open to visitors each summer as part of "The Machine Museum." Today, much of what once made up downtown saco have been replaced by new apartment complexes or other commercial developments - leaving little evidence behind from where Captain Israel Saco himself built his early community into something larger than just two homes on Meeting Street more than 125 years ago!

In recent years there has been talk of resurrecting the once lost Saco Aquarium which would be located on Main Street across from the high school where today's children play sports and explore mall properties nearby
