In 1820, Saco became the site of the first permanent European settlement in Maine. The town was named for Captain John Saco, who explored and surveyed the area in 1819. The town was founded on a small island in Saco Harbour, which is now part of downtown. By 1830, the town had grown to include a wooden fort and two brick buildings. On July 4th, 1830, the first constitution of Maine was ratified at Saco'sFort William meetinghouse. In 1847-48, construction began on the present day Amtrak station at Saco. The original station building was built by contractor James McKay and cost $5,000. In 1951-1952, work began on an addition to the Station that would house an additional room for storage and be used as a garage for buses and trains arriving/departing from Saco Municipal Airport during off peak hours. This addition cost $2 million dollars and was completed in time for Summer Olympics 1959. The current Amtrak station building is located at 6 Elm Street across from downtownSacO
