Saco is a town in Hancock County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,890 at the 2010 census. Saco is located on the Penobscot River and its downtown area overlooks it. It is one of the smaller towns in Maine, but has a rich history that can be found nowhere else quite like it. In 1692, sachem (chief) Samuel Abenaki made his home here and led a group of First Nations people in what is now known as the "Battle for the Bascinet". The battle ended with the French losing and Samuel's tribe taking back their land from France. In 1768, Saco became part of Rutland County when it was created from parts of Hancock and York counties. At first, Saco functioned as an agricultural village with only two stores and three homes. But soon after becoming a town, it began to grow rapidly due to its location on the river and access to cheap land. Despite this growth, Saco struggled during World War II because much of its industry had been destroyed by war damage or fire; however, through hard work and determination over many years they have rebuilt most of their businesses and are now back up to full strength. The city hall building at 50 Main Street served as both headquarters for town government until 2003 when they moved into new facilities north of town courthouse which still serve as their main business district today; while their old building housed the library until 2006 when they moved out into their current complex next door which also includes several small businesses including a hair salon called "The Salon" that sits inside what used to be the city hall building - giving locals an opportunity to enjoy high-end local cuisine without having to leave their comfortable townhome! One such successful business started out small but remains very important in Saco today: The Gurney's Bakery/Cafeteria opened its doors in 1941 as just one small convenience store among many throughout Maine during World War II. And although they've faced some tough times along the way (most recently Hurricane Irene in 2011), Gurney's Teamsters Union Local 853 continues operate successfully despite being forced out of existence by owner Rick Gurney Sr.'s bankruptcy filings; all evidence suggests that Rick will not give up easily! In fact, he remains determinedly active within his local union even going so far as running for office again this year on several occasions!
