Ammunition history in Saco, Maine starts with the early days of handguns. The town was founded in 1795 by General John Graves Simcoe and his wife, Deborah. The town would become a center for rifle and shotgun shooting, and it would be home to some of the most famous rifles in America. One of those rifles was the Winchester Model 1894, which is considered one of the most influential firearms ever made. The town would also play a significant role in ammunition production. In 1892, a company called Hennepin Ammunition Manufacturing Company was founded in Saco. That company would become one of the largest producers of ammo in America. They produced both shot guns and pistols using their own manufacturing equipment. As ammunition production grew in Saco, so too did demand for it. This led to an increase in prices for ammo, which put pressure on businesses like Hennepin Ammunition Manufacturing Company to keep up with increased costs. As the largest city in Maine, Saco has a rich history that can be found on both the local and national levels. In 1855, Saco was first settled by English colonists who named it Hingham after Hinghamshire, England. The town’s namesake, Captain John Smith, explored and mapped the area in 1799. By 1800, Saco had a population of around 100 people and was known as a trading post between New England and Canada. In 1854, Saco became part of the Union Territory of Maine when that state was created from parts of Massachusetts and New York. The territory included all of what is now Maine except for the southern tip of Labrador. With its growing population and an increasing demand for goods and services available in the new territory, Saco became one of the most important towns in Maine. During World War II, Saco played an important role as a manufacturing center for munitions production. In addition to producing artillery shells and bombs, sacorigammery also produced tanks, planes, trucks and other military hardware. After the war ended in 1945,Sacomery experienced a rapid growth period which led to increased competition from nearby towns such as Lewiston-Auburn-Newton (Lanham) and Portland-Vancouver (Portland). As sacomore businesses moved into new locations or were forced out by technological advances such as television or automobiles, Sacomery struggled to keep up with these changes. However, over timesacomoiery has regained some former glory including becoming one of Middletown’s leading employers since 2000.
Saco is a town in Maine and the seat of Cumberland County. The population was 8,664 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston-New York-New England media market. Saco's history dates back to 1784, when it was founded by Loyalist refugees from Charlestown, Massachusetts. The town was named for Captain John Saco, who arrived in 1784 as a translator and interpreter with distinction during the French and Indian War. In 1821, Captain Saco donated land to build a courthouse and school hall in town. The first post office in Saco opened on December 3, 1825; it was renamed for Colonel George Washington Irving on November 25 that year. In 1830, General Nathaniel Hawthorne purchased land west of town from Captains John Sabin and Nathaniel Palmer for $5 per acre (or $160 per square mile). Hawthorne built an estate called Hawkeye Hill on this property which he used as his summer home until his death in 1852.Hawthorne bequeathed his entire estate to the town of Hawkeye Hill in 1932–33; it remains under management by the Town Board today. In 1912, local farmers organized themselves into a cooperative society to improve their irrigation systems; they were joined by other farmers throughout New England during World War I to provide food for troops fighting abroad. A new store building and telephone line were constructed in 1922; both are still standing today. In 1928–29, Saco voters approved a bond issue providing funds for directory assistance services within the community and library construction across all townships in Maine; these structures remain today as part of Saco's historical landmark district listing

After World War II, Saco experienced growth as an educational hub thanks to the establishment of three high schools and two colleges. The town has since been called home to many notable people including author Eudora Welty, actor Neil Patrick Harris, and singer Brittany Murphy.
