The population was estimated at 100,711 as of 2018. The first people to live in what is now Portland were Native Americans who hunted game near present-day downtown. In 1821, Captain John Laughing Stockton recommended that an act be passed to create a city on the site of what is now Downtown Portland. On May 15, 1825, a group of investors formed a city charter company and began developing Downtown Portland into one of America's leading commercial and cultural centers. The first buildings in Downtown Portland were built between 1825 and 1830 by members of the Drexel family, which had ownership or control over much of the land around today's City Hall Square and State House Square. The first business opened in early 1830 was Drury's Grocery store which still stands today on Water Street NW. By 1840, there were 10 stores in operation along Water Street NW with an average daily sales volume totaling $1,500 per day! By 1850 there were more than 60 businesses operating along Water street NW with an average daily sales volume totaling $10,000 per day! In 1860 Welcome wagon trains arrived at Fort Donelson from Boston bringing goods such as flour, pork chops and other items for shipment back across Canada to Boston through Fort Donelson before being unloaded at Portsmouth harbor for export! A visit by General Ulysses S Grant during his march through Maine in 1862 helped spur development around Westernport including new businesses like Jardin Rubber Company (later known as Goodyear Tire & Rubber) and Pioneer Glass Works (later renamed Tiffany & Co.). DowntownPortland experienced rapid growth following its incorporation as a city on October 20th 1865 when it became home to over 100 residents! After years of growth and investment spearheaded by Mayor James Waddell and City Councilor Elisha Hunt Emerson Battleefeldt Jr., much infrastructure was developed such as heavy rail transportation within minutes of downtown – making it possible for businesses to reach customers easily without having to leave their cars parked overnight outside! One result Of this rapid growth was that many properties adjacent to current-day Powell'ts Park were developed into high-rise blocks including First National Bank Building (now part of Best Buy), Central Library Annex (now known as Scripps Howard Broadcasting System), Multnomah County Courthouse (nowCourtyard Marriott Marquis Place), Federalist Avenue NE (now Northeast Fourth Avenue), Market Street SW (now Washington Avenue SE) – all while remaining affordable for everyday citizens! In 1916 Oregon Highway No 2 intersected Interstate 95 just south of DowntownPortland creating instant access not only for commuters commuting onto I-95 but also for tourists visiting DowntownPortland for their first time! This corridor has been referred to by some locals throughout history as "The Boulevard That Took America To China" due TO its important role in developing trade relationships between Asia/China AND America!! Today remnants OF this original highway can still be seen running parallel northeast from Veterans Memorial Coliseum towards Willamette University; providing yet another reminder that commerce played a critical role during our city's early days!!!
