In 1775, the British burned down the old Mayflower settlement in present-day Boston after a dispute with the local Indian tribe. The original town center was located on what is now State Street near Second Avenue. In 1820, Danish immigrants arrived in Portland and founded a new village called New Denmark on the east side of downtown. By 1830, there were over 50 families living in New Denmark. The townspeople voted to secede from Augusta County in 1838 and form their own county called Cumberland County under governor Daniel Webster. In 1841, Cumberland County became part of Maine when it was admitted to the United States as a state. Portland's growth paralleled that of its neighbor Lewiston which became an important port for rice exports during the early 19th century and also saw construction of large factories for textiles and other products such as shoes by Japanese immigrants during World War II%. On July 4th 1903, Mayor John Emery announced plans for a new park along City Hall Square that would become known as Burnside Park after General James Burnside who served as Commander-in-Chief of Union forces during the American Civil War

On July 4th, 1825, whileClark was moving his army across country from Nashville to join Johnson at Corinth Barracks northwest of Memphis Tennessee General George Atkinson Powell attacked Powell's force killing fifteen men and capturing one cannonball believed to have been used by General Jackson during his victory over Robert E Price at Battle Horseshoe Bend four months earlier
