The population was estimated to be over 60,000 in 2015. The first European settlers were men and women from the nearby Massachusetts colony of Plymouth who arrived on May 12, 1620. They named their new town after their native country, Portugal (Funchal), which they had reached via the crossings of the Atlantic Ocean. Portuguese traders had visited Portland before and some may have built contact with Native Americans there but no evidence survives that Portuguese sailors ever landed in this area or attempted to establish permanent trade links with Native Americans. Portland's first mayor was John Greenough who served from 1628 to 1631; his predecessor Nicholas de la Tour served until January 1, 1629 when he resigned due to health concerns related to an ongoing war with England. In February 1630 Nathaniel Eaton became Mayor afterbeing elected by popular vote over John Greenough. Eaton remained Mayor until his death on December 25th of that year at age 73 years old; during his term he also served as Town Clerk and Surveyor-General for Portland Township (later Cumberland County). In 1786 Jonathan Edwards moved from Boston to what is now known as Northeast Portland where he opened a school for boys which taught him important lessons about Christianity that would influence his later writing career. On April 5th of that year, Revd Jonathan Edwards married Sarah Grimshaw here at her home just east of downtownPortland following a long engagement.. Reverend Edwards' wife was one of PV's most vocal advocates for religious toleration throughout New England and she played an instrumental role in helping make Portland an open society despite its location within British America's restrictive slave trade policies
