In that time, Portland was known as an important trading post between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The town developed into a major center for political, religious, and economic activity in what is now northern Maine. In 1846, Portland became the capital of Maine after being chosen by the state legislature. At that time, it was one of only two cities in America to be designated as such. Despite this designation, Portland never achieved much notoriety among its counterparts in North America due to its lack of cultural or economic significance. However, things began to change in 1865 when John A. McFarlane founded the first papermill in what is now downtown Portland. This mill led to increased trade throughout the city and helped spur development along Oregon Avenue which today forms part of State Street NW. The history of Portland began with its founding as Middletownsmith John Greenough's settlement on October 17, 1820. When it was decided that Middletown should be the new capital of Aroostook County after Bangor had been closed for lack of support, Greenough submitted a proposal to town meeting on January 26th, 1821 which was accepted unanimously. He named his settlement "Portland" after King George III of England who had granted him land near Portsmouth during his visit to America in 1788-89. With approval from both the council and voters, Greenough set about building his flourishing community which soon boasted five shotguns per household and ten horses for equipping its citizens for their manyenterprise opportunities as well as four churches (the first being built in 1824). Despite initial problems such as poor transportation infrastructure and low quality river water caused by yellow fever epidemics that struck during its early years - includinga devastating fire that destroyed much of downtown on May 30th 1830-Portland quickly emerged as one of Maine's leading agricultural towns with large markets for fresh produce year round and some Of the earliest businesses were lumberyards/ sawmills operated outfitted with power sources brought overland from Canada where wood was still being exported at high prices at that time The first post office opened on December 1st, 1830 In 1836 Portland hosted what would become known as its first national exposition when it participated in exchanged programs organized by President Andrew Johnson under Secretary Edwin Mudd’s direction In 1865 Portland became part of newly created Lewiston-Auburn County In 1932 a hurricane destructive storm hit which destroyed nearly all business except two flour mills before damaging or destroying more than fifty homes A extensive rebuilding program following this event led to increased economic prosperity with many new shops opening up throughout downtown including several banks; millinery; clothing stores; automobiles; restaurants etc After World War II there were reductionsin numbers due largelyto restrictions placed upon urban populations growth resultingin physical destructionof neighborhoodscharacterizedby wide open spacesand high rises
