In 1945, another gunsmith named Arthur Purdy reopened an old factory on SE Hawthorne Boulevard in southeast Portland for handgun sales by mail order only (the first time handguns were sold through mail order). Purdy's business was known as "Purdy Firearms." Purdy Firearms operated until 1978 when it closed due to economic problems.
