Portland, Maine is a small town in the northeastern United States. The population was 7,826 at the 2010 census. The town is bordered by Portland, Maine to the east, Kennebunkport, Maine to the northeast, and Yarmouth, Massachusetts to the northwest. The first Europeans to visit what is now Portland were Dutch traders in 1621-22. The English founded a trading post here in 1645 as part of their attempt to open up new land in New England. In 1768 British troops burned down the original Dutch trading post and replaced it with an English building which served as a jail for local Native Americans until 1820. In 1802 Boston merchants bought 1/4 of all of present-day Portland from Chief Joseph who claimed it as his protectorate. The townspeople had petitioned for independence from Massachusetts but were not successful until after American troops invaded Canada during the War for Independence in 1812 and burned down several buildings including Fort George on Cape May Island (now part of Yorktown Beach). As part of this invasion General John Forbes captured Vancouver Island from British control on July 14th 1812 and sent troops across Long Point Bridge into Portland Bay where they destroyed most of what was left of Fort George before withdrawing back overland. By 1800 there were only two houses remaining in downtown; one used as a public schoolhouse and one occupied by Captain Amos Chandler who ran a ferry service between Portsmouth and Bangor docks serving both Dartmouth and Waldorf Cliffs hotels ashore along with numerous other businesses In 1850s Portland became known as "the metropolis" due largely to its role as headquarters for sugar Refineries located here including those owned by James Kapp & Company which produced approximately ninety percent of America's refined sugar exports Portland also became home to many factories such as Wabash Coal Company (later Eastern coal) that processed coal mined around Mount Hood National Park beginning about 1870 Many people came here during this time such as: Reverend David Starr Jordan who built Stroudsburg Bible College; Salmon Pinchot who developed Forest Service policies towards conservation; Augustus Saint Germain whose store front still stands today on Third Avenue near State Street; Ezra Cornell who started modern plumbing technology; Driggs Wheeler pioneer developer of electric streetcars within city limits
