Portland, Maine is a city in the United States. The population was 569,433 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in New England after Boston and Worcester. The first permanent settler in what would become Portland was Captain John Meares of Portsmouth, NH, who landed his ships on Cumberland Island on October 14, 1609. He named his new home Port Royal (now part of Portland). The first permanent English settlement in Maine was at Fort Thomas on Cape Elizabeth on December 10, 1623 by Capt. John Smith and settlers from Rhode Island. A smallpox epidemic that struck the colony in 1629 caused many deaths and forced most of the colonists to abandon their homes for fear of another outbreak which they knew would follow soon. In 1638, after years of struggle against Native American resistance and several devastating winters, Plymouth Colony's leaders decided to establish themselves permanently along the coast of present-day Maine with headquarters at Falmouth (present day Portland). They organized a militia detachment which became known as "The Company" and began construction of their fortification including a strong casemate called King's Chapel/Fenway House. After failed negotiations with local Indian tribes over land rights and fishing privileges - culminating in an attack by 350 warriors led by Chief Sekiwetok – they moved into their new territory largely complete except for Fort Thomas which still stood nearby awaiting completion before submission to British rule. Aftermath The Plymouth fleet sailed back to England without ever landing their cargo but left behind 850 menagerie animals plus equipment including cannons that were eventually used during King William's War against France (1689-1690). [These events] set stage for what would become known as “the Great Migration”: people from British Isles moving westward across North America seeking opportunities beyond what was available eastward….. By 1700 about 60%of Portland’s population originated from European bornigrants or descendants thereof….. By 1800 only 10%of its population consisted exclusively of nonwhite immigrants.....
