Lewiston was once a thriving mill town, but it is now an unremarkable community located in rural Maine. Lewiston's history dates back to the early 1800s, when it was one of the most populous settlements in what is now Maine. The town's founding date is unknown, but it likely occurred during the time when land grants were given out to settlers in eastern Maine. The first mill in Lewiston was built by George Wetherall in 1820. By 1830, Lewiston was home to six mills and forty-eight households. At that time, local textile merchants bought or leased land near the town for spinning yarn and fabricating other products. In 1850, Lewiston had a population of 412 people and ten businesses. By 1860, the population had decreased to 158 people and only three businesses. In 1871, Lewiston lost its main mill complex due to foreclosure on its loans by creditors led by John Davenport. However, within a few years new mills had been built at both ends of Main Street and the community began to rebound again as industry shifted from textiles toward more recent growth such as aluminum production and shipping. The post-World War II era saw some significant changes within the community: In 1955, two bridges over icy rivers were constructed; this helped improve transportation links between Lewiston and surrounding communities as well as creating more opportunities for economic development outside of Mill City Mall which became known as "the heart of downtown." However, much like many other towns throughout rural America after World War II—and especially following Vietnam —Lewiston experienced a period of decline beginning in the late 1960s through until around 1990 when it slowly started to experience revitalization efforts with new buildings being erected along Main Street including restaurants (including several Asian fusion restaurants), stores (including Sears & Kmart), housing developments (such as Quality Inn), and even a professional wrestling arena which served as venues for concerts before eventually closing down in 2007 due to continued financial struggles for the townspeople. Sometime during this time period there also existed talk about moving the community closer to Portland where larger metropolitan areas seemed likelier destinations for small towns after seeing increasing joblessness among their citizens throughout much of post-war America while commute times from downtown Portland got longer each day; however no real action took place despite numerous letters/comments sent directly from residents pleading with city hall officials about this issue (& similar concerns across various cities). Today many aspects associated with life in Lewistown are changing: One example is that retail sales have increased significantly since 2000 while manufacturing jobs have decreased; moreover rents are becoming increasingly unaffordable for 2006 median household incomes even though prices have not kept up with inflation rates; furthermore property values continue trending upwards because there has been little investment recently relative to population growth rate although many high end properties have become available recently thanks partially to rising prices related gentrification trends nearby). Despite these challenges local government has made strides lately towards repairing infrastructure (elevator problems etc.), investing into art programs & preservation initiatives etc., particularly through forming partnerships w/ neighboring municipalities
