In 1854, Lewiston's first target shooting club was organized. The club met in the old mill and shot at a range that was located on the east side of town. In 1861, Lewiston became a town and the target shooting society moved to its present location on Main Street. The society continued to meet until 1945 when it disbanded due to lack of members. The original target holders were made from hickory timber which was scarce at the time. They consisted of four posts with an iron ring around each post. Each holder had two holes drilled through it about one-third inch from its top so that a ball could be fired into it without hitting anything else. The balls were rebound off the posts and hit the ground or someone's head, who would then take them home and shoot at them again later that day. The first targets were shot at 50 yards but because they were not very accurate, they were soon upgraded to 100 yards with new bullets made specifically for target shooting purposes. At this distance, accuracy was more important than stopping power because balls traveling this far tended to ricochet off other objects in their path and eventually land near or on someone's head instead of going straight downrange as intended. Over time, different types of ammunition were developed for target Shooting including buckshot (a type of lead bullet), birdshot (a type of slug rounds), and smokeless powder (a type of propellant that does not produce sparks when Fired). These different types of ammunition caused significant changes in how target shooters could use their weapons over time as well as making it possible for people living outside cities such as Lewiston to participate in open air shootings using these same types of projectiles without havingto travel too far away!

Lewiston is a town in Maine, United States. The population was 9,664 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cumberland County. The first permanent settler in Lewiston was James Fenton in 1819. He built a cabin on the banks of the Penobscot River. The town name was chosen by a vote of residents in 1824 and it stuck for over two decades. In 1851, Lewiston businessman George Stephenson donated land to build what would become the nucleus of what would be called America's largest cotton mill, located on Main Street today. At that time, Lewiston had no shopping or services available other than its small grocery store and post office which closed in 1964 due to lack of business competition. Lewiston's growth happened primarily because of its proximity to mills and transportation links with nearby Portland and Boston. In 1916, when Maine became an offshoot of the United States during World War I, Lewiston became one of the primary military logistical hubs for troops stationed across North America due to its close location to both ports and railroads. Lewiston also experienced rapid growth after it joined the National Football League (NFL) as part of team Minneapolis-St Paul in 1920 as part of expansion plans for then- fledgling American football league. The town quickly became known for its "Tall Ships" game day celebration featuring huge tents erected along downtown streets highlighting local businesses from food sales all the way up to tailgate contests where fans could purchase drinks from vendors while standing on topofthe tents - something still being done today! A new school was opened in 1926 just south of downtown following an effort by Mayor Tilton Peakey that saw funds raised through a bake sale benefiting his own mayoral campaign coffers as well as private donations from citizens mmolving interest in providing education opportunities throughout central Maine despite difficult economic times at that time resulting largely from prohibition efforts targeting farmers markets statewide instead). That same year saw construction begin on what is now Building A – now home to many community organizations including Habitat for Humanity – with support from local businesses including Wausau Furniture Merchant’s Association members who donated furniture necessary for construction plus an additional $5K generated through special sales during October 1929; this event helped spur development around Town Square which included several restaurants (including Girdle’s Buffet), banks (Pioneer Trust Company & McKnight Bank), public library (First Natl Bank), Masonic lodge #7 & 10 (Lutheran Church) & more! One key reason given for this resurgence was increased access via Interstate 95 becoming available closer into town making possible job training availability directly within city limits which has led various businesses such as KFC since 2005 relocated permanently or temporarily inside City Hall thanks partially to US Department Of Labor funding offered through their Head Start program!) Just prior To The Recession started in 2008/2009 most major employers either relocated or decided not expand out into rural areas outside Of State due To Economic conditions…. however some have returned like Albertsons(Terre Haute IN) Store reopened under new ownership

In recent years much of the commercial development associated with Lewiston has taken place within Cairo Township outside of town limits
