Lewiston began its history as a trading post on the Penobscot River. In 1784, following French exploration of this area, fur traders established Fort Beaubien here, named for then-Governor Louis Antoine de Beauharnais who had overseen their construction. The fort served as a trading outpost until 1791 when it burned down. The next year saw another French exploration of this region led by Lieutenant Colonel Pierre François Legault which resulted in the founding of Fort LaFontaine on what is now south side of downtown Lewiston (now known as Central Square). This fort served primarily as a supply depot during Queen’s War (1795–1800), but also played an important role during King George III’s war with France (1793–1802).
