The town is named after General Edward NeumannLewiston means "place where the river bends" and refers to the bend of the Penobscot River which is located in the town. Lewiston was first settled by French people in 1795 and was originally called Pemaquid ( pronounced -puh-muh-didge). In 1810, the name was changed to Lewiston after General John A. Lewiswood (1784-1846), who served as a U.S. Captain during the War for Independence and later became Mayor of Portland, Maine. The site where Lewiston now stands was first settled by Greeks in 1799 and their village was destroyed by Native Americans in 1800. The town is home to many businesses including two banks, several restaurants, a library, several stores, one hotel, and two churches. The commercial development has led to heavy traffic congestion on Main Street which has resulted in some improvement projects such as widened shoulders and new lighting fixtures on streetlights that have helped reduce vehicular backups during peak hours.
