In 1898, Lewiston voters passed a referendum asking for annexation by Auburn which happened without incident. The towns merged into one municipality on January 1, 1899 under the name of Auburn-Lewiston Borough. On July 1, 1959, two new municipalities were created: Northumberland with its own town hall and Southold with its own shopping mall and beach access! Lewiston has had many businesses open their doors since its incorporation as a borough: Jardine's Pharmacy (now Dempster Drugs), Chrysler Corporation (now Jeep), Sears Roebuck & Co., Belk's department store anchors off Main Street since 1912, Seafood Unlimited until 1978; KFC (now Yum! Brands); First National Bank; Wachovia Bank; American Fidelity Loan Company; Stoneleigh Farms Winery; State Farm Insurance company until it closed in 1996 and then occupied by Lowe's Home Hardware until 2006 when it was purchased by Menards Incorporated The population of Auburn grew rapidly during this time as people started moving out to larger cities such as Boston and Detroit but also new immigrants started arriving including Poles who worked at mills in nearby Manchester Township . This growth led to overcrowding within the boundaries of both towns so an effort began to merge them back together again but this proposal met opposition from some residents who felt that their communities would remain separate even if they regained merger status . After much debate over consolidation or not there finally seemed to be enough interest in amalgamating so on December 3rd 1999 an agreement was made whereby all three municipalities agreed to become one with no legal difference between them save for their respective names! With this merger come increased security concerns due to how similar their populations were already becoming despite being separated by mountains ! It took nearly 20 years before Lawton High School opened its doors after most students had been sent away for school during World War II because Cumberland County didn't have any high schools available for kids living beyond five miles! This school originally served students from Auburn Village through downtown Lewiston but eventually all students in town attended once it reopened in 1957 aftermoving up I-95! Today Lawton offers morning classes through local colleges while still serving lunchtime classes throughout the day which makes commuting more manageable for locals
