It is part of the Portland-South Portland-Farmingdale, ME-NH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Lewiston was John Day on July 20, 1795. He left with his party of nine men and three women on an American Revolutionary Expedition led by Captain John Montresor. Lewiston's rich copper and lead mines attracted prospectors in the early 19th century and mining began in 1824. By 1832, over 50 companies were operating in Lewiston and its environs. The town's first store was built in 1835. In 1861, Lewiston became a census place when it was merged with neighboring Auburn to become what is now Cumberland County. On December 1, 1907, Lewiston incorporated as a city under the name of "Lewiston". In 1970 it changed its name to "Portland." The economy of Lewiston has been based primarily on agriculture since its establishment as a settlement; however, this has been supplemented by industry over time including aluminum production from 1959 to 1979 and pharmaceuticals from 1985 to present day; however these have all gradually disappeared due to global competition although some remain active such as Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) which moved there in 2007 from Portland after struggling for years with overcrowding at their former location near downtown Portland
