In 1857, the town of Lewiston and its two trustees purchased a rifle safe from John Earle. The safe was used as an election office until 1870 when it was moved to the old Mechanics Institute. The town's growth continued until World War II when it lost most of its industry to warfare and destruction. After the war, Lewiston experienced some growth but has since been declining in population. Today,Lewiston is largely a agricultural community with few residents remaining outside of school districts within Cumberland County or nearby towns such as Portland and Hillsboro.
