Lewiston is a town in Penobscot County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bangor-Biloxi-East Point, ME Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lewiston is located on the southern edge of Penobscot Bay and has a total area of 21 square miles (59 km2). The first permanent settler in what later became Lewiston was David Lord who arrived in 1795 with his family from Northumberland, England. The Town of Lewiston was organized on February 3, 1821 byAct of Congress as one section of an enlarged Bangor Township. On March 10th 1826 following Act No 2 it became an act to annex all sections east of its line within Penobscot County to Bangor Township. In 1881 when the Canadian Pacific Railway came through town and laid track through town center for their main line southward from Portland it destroyed most buildings in town including mills, churches and other important civic sites which had been built over many years during various stages of development. A new courthouse was built in 1901 by contractor J H Haskell between Main and Grendel Streets utilizing local granite quarries situated along the original tracks which remain today as part of downtown Lewiston's architecture. The old courthouse burned down on December 5th 1916 while being used as a temporary detention center for Japanese American citizens during World War II; this fire also destroyed much valuable downtown property which fortunately did not include any Millinery stores or other important commercial districts which were lost forever in that fire except for some replacement brick structures erected since then around the corner at 4 Keyes Street After World War II things slowly started to picks up again with new businesses opening up such as a paper mill and restaurant opened up next door to the old post office building on Main Street; however it would be several more decades until any real major changes took place until finally Hurricane Katrina made landfall here August 29th 2005 causing extensive damage both inside and outside downtownLewiston resulting in $30 million worth in losses across bothPenobscot Countyand Maine This hurricane left behind an entire block off Main Street completely devastationed leaving no hope for reconstruction or even redevelopment anywhere near where people once lived or worked Lewiston has seen some really significant changes over time including becoming home to two universities now one public & one private; as well as additional housing developments such as One Hundred Mile House & Watershed Communities just outside town limits; this recent influx has caused some serious overcrowding especially among older generations with younger families struggling to find space One thing that has kept many residents here throughout these recent transformations though have been their shared commitment to community service both personal & professional alike; something you can see right out front when looking at some streets like Second Avenue where there are literally hundreds if not thousands of volunteer hours logged each year alone!

Lewiston is located on the Penobscot River, about 25 miles (40 km) north of Portland and 50 miles (80 km) east of Bangor. The town was founded in 1848 by Zenas Morse and his family as a logging community on the banks of the Penobscot River. In 1870, Lewiston became one of two towns in Maine to be incorporated as unincorporated villages separate from their larger cities. The first post office was established in Lewiston in 1872; it moved to its present location in 1896. Lewiston has experienced significant growth over the years; it annexed neighboring townships in 1978 and 2002, and has since reached a population size greater than 2,000 people. The town's economy includes manufacturing and services such as transportation, health care, retail sales, and agriculture; several restaurants are located within walking distance of each other or within minutes' driving distance using public transportation options such as buses or trains.
