In 1785, two years after the end of the Revolutionary War, a group of men from New York City founded a trading post on land that had been donated by Caleb Strongsberry. The post was called Fort William Henry and it remained in operation until 1841 when it was replaced byLewiston Town Hall. In 1824, an act passed by the Maine Legislature authorized erection of a school district which would serve all residents within its boundaries; this district became known as Lewiston Rural District #2 due to its location near Fort William Henry (later renamed Lewiston Town Hall). The town began to grow rapidly and in 1826 there were only 14 residents living intown limits while well over 100 lived off-campus in rural areas around it. By 1830, Lewiston had become an "unparalleled" boomtown with over 1,000 people living in downtown including saloons and hotels that could accommodate up to 400 guests each night during peak business times. Population growth continued into the 19th century with new construction such as churches and schools along with larger families seeking out larger towns forresidential opportunities while still maintaining close ties to their family roots both inside and outsideof town limits despite growing distances between themand their hometowns. This pattern changed abruptly beginning in earnest around 1880 when railroad construction began reachinglarger towns throughout central America bringing many workers flooding into Lewiston en masse followed closely by lumbering Leavell mills nearby which created large demand for goodsproduced here but also generating huge amounts of pollution that impacted both residents and businesses alike for decades thereafter culminating with World War I when extreme air quality conditions necessitated military barracks be built adjacent to town Limits just east ofthe riverfront leading directly intoWhatcom County whereupon intensely dirty water from nearby mines sickened hundreds of civilians daily until finally stopped thanks largely to public outcry forcing repairs etc..
