Gun hammer history in Lewiston, Maine can be traced back to 1847 when a small gunsmith shop on the corner of Commercial and Hancock was established by Levi Coffin. In 1868, John A. Nutting opened his own gunsmith shop on Depot Street and soon became one of the leading firearms dealers in town. By 1909, Nutting had relocated his business to what is now the old post office building and continued to sell guns until his death in 1943. His son-in-law, George Worthy, ran the business until it closed in 1978. From 1938 through 1944, Lewiston was home to The Gun Shop located at 226 Main Street which specialized in shotguns and handguns. This store was eventually replaced by The Shooter's Armory which operated from 1984 until its closure in 1997. In 2006, an adjacent building on Market Street served as the new home for The Gun Shop which reopened under new management later that year. In 1938, local citizens developed a push for handgun registration which culminated with the passage of MCL § 508(a). As a result of this law enforcement initiative, The Gun Shop began offering handgun registration permits to customers who desired them. This service continued until 1984 when it was discontinued due to budget cuts within the state government. Beginning in 1954, The Shooter's Armory began specializing exclusively in rifles and shotguns which it continues to do today at its location on Market Street. This store also offers pistol registration services as well as ammunition sales and Rent-A-Gun services throughout the year. In 2007, The Shooter's Armory underwent a significant renovation that included new flooring and 14 brand new guns cabinets were installed inside including an AR15 rifle cabinet made from high quality walnut wood!
