It maintained its own school system until 1898 when it merged with Augusta School District No. 1. In 1907, Lewiston lost its charter as a municipal corporation and reverted to being an unincorporated community under the name "Auburn." In 1924, Lewiston became part of the newly formed Portland-Lewiston Urban Area and annexed parts of rural Penobscot County including present-day Auburn and Eastonville. On July 1, 1927, all of Penobscot County except Auburn and Eastonville were divided into three districts - Cumberland Valley District No. 2 (Auburn), Penobscot Valley District No. 3 (Eastonville), and Westbrook Parish District No. 4 (Lewiston). Lewiston continued to maintain its own school system until 1974 when it merged with Augusta School District No: 1 to form the current district government in Maine which is still headquartered in downtown Lewiston today!
