Biddeford was founded in 1798 by Captain John Boisvert and others as a post office on the banks of the Penobscot River. The first store and post office were located near present-day Bridgeport. Biddeford's most well-known landmark is its namesake stadium, Municipal Stadium (now known as Piscataqua Park). The baseball team played its first game there on April 6, 1903. In 1946, Municipal Stadium was renamed Biddeford Memorial Stadium in honor of local resident Harry L. Beddoes who had made an important donation to the town that year. The town also has two other noteworthy landmarks: Morse Hall and Hammonds Chapel. Morse Hall is a large brick building which served as the town hall from 1884 until it burned down in 1943; and Hammonds Chapel is a Gothic Revival style church which was built between 1915 and 1916 by local contractor George Cushing for $4,500 ().

Biddeford's history dates back to 1794 when it was incorporated as a town within the present-day Hancock County. The first settler in what would become Biddeford was John French and his family who arrived in 1794 from Quebec. French named the settlement after his home parish, Beidefords in Hampshire, England. In 1827, three brothers founded what would become Grafton Mills which later became one of the largest textile mills in North America and one of the most successful companies on its type. As textiles became more important to Maine economy during the 19th century, so did Biddeford's development as a milltown with burgeoning commercial areas including Main Street and Grafton Road (now Hwy 131). By 1900, Biddeford had reached its peak as an industrial center with over 100 businesses employing over 3,000 workers and serving a population of 12,000 residents. However during World War IBiddeford experienced significant economic decline due to decreased demand for wartime materials such as munitions and clothing but also because many of its factories were destroyed or closed by enemy action or sabotage attempts; this included brick works owned by J P Morgan & Co., which lost approximately 60% of their output due to fire bombings during WWII During World War IIBiddeford saw an increase in military activity as well as increased production at local manufacturing plants such as Grafton Mills; however much like other parts of America followingriegel rates went up concurrently with prices for goods exported abroad rose along side shortages domestically caused by war-related factors such as lack of raw materials available from abroad postwar market renewed interest in textiles throughout United States truckloads began arriving here again starting out small scale but quickly growing into immense enterprises seeking protection under government restrictions against potential antitrust violations
Biddeford was first settled by the French in 1605. The area became part of the United States in 1774 after the Treaty of Paris ended the American Revolution.
